Concern about "Academic Integrity" => Big Brother?
Concern about "Academic Integrity" => Big Brother?
Concern about cheating in online courses -- seems reasonable enough on the surface. At least until a "solution" is proposed which is, as this Chronicle of Higher Education article reports, an "Orwellian" one which "could lead distance-education institutions to require spy cameras in their students' homes."
Thanks to the WCET Community Forum for alerting its members to this issue. This sounds like a bad idea to me. A really bad idea. And of course, this proposed legislation fails the equality test. To paraphrase the corresponding sentence from the Chronicle article: "an institution that offers an campus-based program must prove that an enrolled student is the same person who does the work." Is this statement currently true? Then it's hard for me to see this provision as anything other than a rear-guard action to slow the pace of online learning adoption by (in this case successfully, apparently) imposing more stringent requirements on it compared to campus-based programs.
On the other hand, maybe the actual language of the provision will allow some creative solutions to the problem which are not so intrusive. I couldn't find the actual paragraph in the proposed legislation; perhaps someone else knows how to find it and can let me know?
Also, WCET promises to have "more on this issue" in the near future...
